How to Use This Sitemap Generator
- Enter your website domain.
- Choose optional settings such as last modified date, change frequency, priority, or page limit.
- Click the generate button.
- Wait while the tool crawls your site.
- Download the generated XML file.
- Upload the file to the root of your website (example:
yoursite.com/sitemap.xml). - Submit the sitemap URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
After uploading, you can also mention the sitemap location in your robots.txt file so crawlers can find it easily.
What is an XML Sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a structured file that contains a list of your website’s URLs. It can also include useful extra information such as:
- When the page was last updated
- How often the page usually changes
- The relative priority of the page compared to other pages on the site
Search engines use this file as a helpful guide. It does not guarantee that every page will rank or get indexed, but it can make the crawling process more efficient and complete — especially on new websites, large sites, or sites with weak internal linking.
Think of a sitemap as a map of your website. Without it, search engines have to discover pages mainly through links. With a sitemap, you give them a clear list of the pages you want them to know about.
Why You Should Have a Sitemap
Search engines mainly find pages by following links. In many cases this works well, but important pages can still be missed or take longer to get discovered when:
- Your website is new and has few backlinks
- You publish a lot of content regularly
- Internal linking is not very strong
- You run an eCommerce store with many product pages
- You have archived or deep pages that are hard to reach
A sitemap helps solve these problems by giving search engines a direct list of important URLs on your website. Even established websites benefit from keeping an updated sitemap.
After You Create the Sitemap
Once you have downloaded and uploaded the file:
- Log in to Google Search Console.
- Select your property.
- Go to the Sitemaps section.
- Enter your sitemap URL (usually
https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml). - Click Submit.
You can do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools. Submitting the sitemap tells search engines where your sitemap is located so they can process the URLs listed in the file.
Best Practices for a Good Sitemap
- Only include live, working pages (no broken links).
- Keep the sitemap updated when you add or remove important pages.
- Do not include pages that are blocked in robots.txt.
- Use clean, canonical URLs.
- For very large websites, consider creating a sitemap index file.
- Prefer HTTPS URLs if your site uses SSL.
A clean and accurate sitemap is more useful than a large one filled with low-value or broken pages.
